Veterans Day Reflection Against Our Current Economic Crisis
November 11, 2008
Reflecting on today, Veterans Day, and why we memorialize it, I found myself wondering how many men and woman have given their lives over time so that we can enjoy the freedoms and quality of life we live today.
My mind wandered a bit as it tried to understand this day against the backdrop of our current U.S. and world economic crisis. Just as we rightly trusted in our Veterans of past military conflicts to safeguard our rights and liberties, we wrongly trusted in our financial institutions and those entrusted with the safety of our economic underpinnings.
I’d like to challenge our President, our President-elect and our Congress to liken our current economic plight to an analogous past reality for which we have another memorial date approaching, June 8th, 1941.
As we approach this date, this citizen would ask his President, President-Elect, and the standing Congress to put differences aside and call for “all measures to be taken for our (economic) defense”, regardless of political inclination. Treat this economic crisis as you would a state of war that was unprovoked, at least by the populace you are sworn to protect.
If unanimously and unselfishly waged, this fight to protect the economic foundation of our country, and it’s import to the world economy, will be as important to future generations as have world wars in our past.
Respectfully,
